Winner of the Good Design Award in 2024, the Lemnos Earth (Washed) Clock uses the traditional Japanese “Araidashi” washed finish to create a distinctive clock face.
 
Araidashi is a plastering technique in which gravel and other aggregates are mixed with mortar and then partially washed away before hardening, revealing the materials within the surface. This technique allows different materials, sizes, and colors to create varied expressions.
 
For Earth (Washed), pure white crystalline limestone, known as “Kansuiseki,” is used to create the clock’s textured surface. Each stone reflects light differently, giving the face subtle variations in appearance. The gently curved form of the clock creates changes in light and shadow that further highlight the stone.
 
The numbers are engraved into the surface before the washing process, making the finishing process particularly demanding. Skilled craftsmen at “soil” carefully wash the surface while preserving the edges of the engraved numbers, combining traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary clock design.
