Designed by the world famous Japanese design firm nendo, its founder Oki Sato, the designer of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics Cauldron, created 3 Lemnos nendo cuckoo clocks that changed our perception of how a cuckoo clock should look like.
The Tilt Cuckoo Clock by nendo
The unusual angles of both the cuckoo bird and the dial design imply that this clock should be placed upside-down. Placing the heavier internal components asymmetrically on one side of the base enables the clock to naturally maintain its balance. By changing the usually preconceived idea of a cuckoo clock, Sato challenges the user to look at familiar things from a (upside-down) different angle.
The Bookend Cuckoo Clock by nendo
A cuckoo clock that can be used as a bookend by splitting the dial’s face into two parts. This merge comes naturally as the clock and books co-exist on the shelf harmoniously together. Sato adds additional functional feature to a birdhouse cuckoo clock, turning it into an all encompassing bookshelf of its own.
The Dent Cuckoo Clock by nendo
A cuckoo clock with a dent which looks as if the traditional clock has been carved out of the block. The cuckoo bird peeks out sideways from a small hole on the side of the clock. By using the negative space of house on a 3 dimensional space, the Dent is a bold design object from Oki Sato that makes this timepiece a design statement for any space.
